Chapter 14
They left Sherman at sunup the next morning, following the road to Tyler. They had talked for quite a while before climbing into their blankets, trying to decide the best course of action for the two of them. Still undecided when morning came, they started out with Nacogdoches as their destination, simply because they preferred not to remain in Sherman. The only agreement they arrived at was to decide for certain when they reached Tyler whether to continue to the southeast to Nacogdoches, or southwest toward the Whitmore Brothers Ranch. The only thing they were definitely decided upon was to finance whatever they settled on with other peopleâs money. They were still discussing the pros and cons of remaining in the cattle business when they came upon a good place to rest the horses after a ride of about twenty miles.
When the horses were free of their saddles and packs, Casey got a fire going, and before long, he and Eli were chewing on the last strips of smoked deer meat as they enjoyed their first cup of coffee for the day. By the time the horses were ready to go again, they had pretty much decided there was nothing they could do in Nacogdoches, so they might as well turn west when they left Tyler and head toward Waco. So they set out again on the road to Tyler.
After riding for only about fifteen miles, they were surprised to come upon the buildings of another small town. It was definitely a farm town, from the look of it, with several wagons tied in front of the stores and the one saloon they saw. âSleepyâ would be the word they would have picked to describe the town. The road they traveled went straight through the middle of town, and when they met a man driving a wagon on his way out of town, Eli called out to him, âHowdy, neighbor, what town is this?â
The man looked at him as if he was amazed Eli had to ask, but he said politely, âGreenville, this is Greenville.â
âMuch obliged,â Eli said. He turned to Casey then and asked, âYou wanna stop and get a drink of likker? I didnât expect to find a town between Sherman and Tyler.â
âI wouldnât mind stoppinâ,â Casey said. âBut I druther have something to eat, instead of a drink of likker. That little strip of deer meat didnât take up much room in my belly.â
âYou might be right,â Eli reconsidered. âMy bellyâs kinda empty, too. Maybe we need to eat a little somethinâ, and then have a drink of likker.â
Agreed then, they rode the length of the street, looking for someplace to buy some dinner. When they found no hotel and no dining room of any kind, they pulled up next to the boardwalk and asked a man standing in front of the general store if there was someplace to get something to eat.
âSure is,â he said, looking their string of horses over. âReckon it is hard for a stranger.
